Former India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations
Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, a distinguished Indian diplomat, has consistently broken new ground throughout her career. A top performer in the 1987 Indian Foreign Service batch, she became the first woman from India to preside over the United Nations Security Council in December 2022. As India’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York until May 2024, she played a pivotal role in advancing India's global interests. Ambassador Kamboj has also served as India’s first female Ambassador to Bhutan, where she strengthened crucial bilateral ties, and as High Commissioner to South Africa, fostering relations with a key African partner. Her tenure at UNESCO in Paris was marked by notable achievements, aligning with the agency's mission. From 2011-2014, she became India’s first female Chief of Protocol, overseeing high-level diplomatic engagements. Her career also includes postings in Paris, Mauritius, New York, and Cape Town, as well as a role at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.
