Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (Retd), PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM & BAR, has had a distinguished 40-year career in the Indian Army, where he served in some of the most challenging environments from Sri Lanka to the Siachen Glacier, and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). He is highly decorated, with six awards from the President of India and two from the Army Chief. General Hasnain's extensive experience in J&K includes seven tours, during which he commanded the Srinagar-based 15 Corps. A respected military analyst and speaker, he writes for major Indian newspapers and is a frequent presence on television debates. His academic credentials include studies at prestigious institutions such as St. Stephen’s College Delhi, and King’s College London. Since retiring in July 2013, he has been active in promoting strategic culture in India, speaking at various military and civilian institutions. He was appointed Chancellor of the Central University of Kashmir in 2018.
